KATHERINE KERNBERGER
TRANSLATOR & EDITOR OF
THE JOURNALS OF
MARIE BASHKIRTSEFF:
I AM THE MOST INTERESTING
BOOK OF ALL
VOLUME I
&
LUST FOR GLORY
VOLUME II
Katherine Kernberger received her B.A. (ΦΒΚ) from Scripps College in Claremont, California, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. She spent a year as a Fulbright scholar in Florence, Italy, studying Provençal and Italian medieval literature. She has taught at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, for over thirty years. While her specialty is the poet Lord Byron and the Romantics, she teaches broadly across the span of British literature, as well as the history of the English language. She also teaches the Greek and Roman classics and medieval and renaissance works in translation. She serves on the board of the Byron Society of America and participates regularly in the International Byron Conferences. Drawing on her mother’s materials and returning to the original French, Dr. Kernberger has prepared a translation of the Journal of Marie Bashkirtseff that does justice to the realities of Marie’s life and speaks directly to modern readers. For more than a decade, she has shared Marie’s history with colleagues, friends, and students. Over the years, she has taught many courses that have included Marie and her Journal. In one version of this class, students encounter Marie’s artworks and manuscripts in museums and libraries in France and visit places in France and Italy central to the Journal. Dr. Kernberger hopes that this beautifully illustrated edition will do as much for Marie’s readers worldwide.
